Lot #374.1 - Ford's all new for '57 Fairlane featured a lower, wider body, improved suspension, more power from the V8 under the hood, and, as you would expect, tail fins. With the new body style, Ford also introduced the first American production car to feature a retractable hard top, an idea that took the rest of the automotive world 40 years to catch on to. The nifty top fully folds away into the trunk completely hidden from sight for an extra sleek top down look. These cars were introduced with much fanfare and were all the rage. Of course, at nearly a 30% price premium, they catered to the affluent and ultimately only made up 2% of Fairlane sales for 1957. Part of this premium was due to the fact that they were finished on a completely separate assembly line by skilled technicians to ensure higher standards of fit and finish on the more complex car. The example pictured here is finished in Inca Gold with white hard top and a white and black two tone interior. Features include pristine Kelsey Hays wire wheels with wide whites, power top, power steering, and authentic vintage California black plates. From the superb interior to the excellent paint, the spotless engine bay, and the detailed undercarriage, this Retractable is an outstanding example of a very collectible Ford.
