Description
Lot #649 - One of several survivors from a total production of 2,648. It was available in a host of colors. The car has a Hemi V8 engine, 4-speed transmission, rack & pinion steering, disc brakes, roll up windows and wire wheels. This car also has the unusual removable hardtop and original tonneau cover. For a company that was more used to building luxury sedans and limousines, the SP250 was a drastic break from tradition. This fiberglass roadster did not look like any other car and boasted a V8 engine designed by Edward Turner. The lightweight and compact V8 made it powerful and reliable. The fiberglass cost 10 times less than steel. Unusual for a car from the era, the SP250 is equipped with Girling disc brakes on all 4-wheels. Because the SP250 is so light, this means highly effective braking. Leather interiors were common in the 50s British sports cars, but the unusual feature in the SP250 was winding windows. Other equipment included tachometer, a lockable glovebox and an ash tray. Daimler first presented the car as the Dart, but because Chrysler was already using the name, Daimler was forced to change the badging to the SP250.
