Description
Lot #1059 - The Apollo was conceived in California by Milt Brown as a competitor to Aston Martin and Ferrari and was built by Frank Reisner's Carrozzeria Intermeccanica of Turin, Italy. The superb body design was by Franco Scaglione, the most famous independent designer of the time - the Alfa Romeo B.A.T.s, Lamborghini 350 GT and Porsche Abarth Carrera also are his creations. This Apollo 5000GT has a number of unique features. It is the first of the series to be powered by the 300cid Buick V8 engine which also has very rare aluminum cylinder heads. The transmission is a Borg Warner T10 4-speed. The dashboard layout and steering column are unique in the Apollo series and it also carries an aluminum Monza style external fuel filler and Dayton wire wheels. It is a matching numbers car, and even has the original owner's manual. One ofo only 79 Apollos built, it has had only three California owners from new and less than 20K miles on the clock (believed to be original.) This example is in excellent running and driving condition, combining Scaglione's brilliant design with the power, reliability and ease of maintenance inherent in its Buick power. It is quicker than an Aston Martin DB4 of Ferrari 330GTC, and is much more rare and reliable than either.
