Lot #624.1 - This 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle is a very rare "first-year" Super Beetle, and includes factory Auto-Stick with a fresh restoration, paying particular attention to detail, and is finished in cream with white interior. Also features a luggage rack. History: In 1971, alongside continued production of the "standard" Volkswagen Beetle, a Type 1 variant which featured a MacPherson strut front suspension and a redesigned front end. Officially known (and marketed in Europe) as the VW 1302 from 1971-1972, is more commonly known as the "Super Beetle" sporting a "stretched nose" design, which replaced the dual parallel torsion bar beams which had compromised trunk space and relocated the spare tire from a near vertical to a low horizontal position. The redesign resulted in a tighter turning radius, and a doubling of the front compartment's cargo volume. As with previous models, air pressure from the spare tire pressurized the windshield washer canister, in lieu of an electric pump. The first Super Beetle sedan rolled off the assembly line on August 11, 1970 for the 1971 model year. It sold surprisingly well. Having Volkswagen's excellent reputation for quality and value dating back to the 1950s didn't hurt sales either.
