BIDDING WARS AND WORLD RECORDS: Barrett-Jackson’s 15th year in Palm Beach closes strong

TIM_5786

Bidding wars, beautiful cars, amazing automobilia and great moments for charity marked the third and final day of the 15th Annual Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction.

Fans of all ages streamed into the auction site at the South Florida Fairgrounds today for what many refer to as “Super Saturday,” when some of the most valuable cars on the docket cross the auction block.

Impeccably restored gas pumps again ruled the day during the morning’s automobilia auction, which saw 100 pristine pieces of the past cross the block. Topping the charts was a perfectly restored and customized 1926 Boyle-Dayton visible gas pump (Lot #5986) that sold for $46,000.

When the collector cars began to roll across the stage, the arena erupted on numerous occasions as several vehicles found themselves in the midst of bidding wars – including a stunning 1962 Cadillac Custom Convertible known as “Cadalina” (Lot #672) that sold for $154,000. A 1967 Ford Mustang GT Custom Fastback (Lot #707) NFL wide receiver Reggie Wayne brought to the block and sold for $206,800 landed him among the auction’s top 10 sales. A 1971 Custom Chevy K5 Blazer (Lot #681) and Dale’s Earnhardt’s #3 Goodwrench Race Car (Lot #648), brought the house down when they each brought in $220,000 – and set new world records for sales at auction in the process, along with 10 other vehicles today.

Top-selling collector cars of the day included a 2006 Ford GTX1 (Lot #706) at $401,500 and a 1961 Volkswagen 23-Window Deluxe Microbus (Lot #711) for $291,500 – both record sales at auction.

The final two of five charity cars at the Palm Beach Auction had their turn in the spotlight today. Lot #3003, a custom tribute Mustang SCT M3006-07 that is #6 of only 50 handcrafted conversions by Sanderson, sold for $75,000 – with another $10,000 donated by longtime Barrett-Jackson friend Michelle Mauzy, continuing the generosity her late husband Greg so often exhibited at the auctions. Every penny of the hammer price will go to the Darrell Gwynn Chapter of the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis.

A special truck with a presidential past came to the block for the Community Foundation of Cleveland and Bradley County, Tennessee, for the further designated purpose of supporting one of the nation’s top youth wrestling clubs – the Higher Calling Wrestling Club, Inc. in Tennessee – and the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. Previously owned by George W. Bush, who used it on his ranch in Crawford, Texas, the 2009 Ford F-150 King Ranch Super Crew Pickup (Lot #3004) is signed by the former president and hammered for $90,000, 100 percent of which will go directly to the worthy cause.

The energy, enthusiasm and generosity of the collector car community made this auction one to remember. Check out the videos and gallery below for some unforgettable moments of the 15th Annual Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction:
