We can’t thank everyone enough for making Barrett-Jackson’s 45th anniversary year one incredible ride. Because of our fantastic bidders, consignors, sponsors and fans, we certainly had a lot to celebrate. One of our biggest honors is that we’ve now helped to raise more than $91 million for charity to date through the auction of some very special vehicles. We are privileged to provide the platform for this generous giving, and judging by what is beginning to take shape for 2017, we’re on the road to raising $100 million.
We’ve set new records and reached new goals at every turn. At our 2016 Scottsdale Auction, the sale of a 2017 Acura NSX VIN #001 raised an amazing $1.2 million for charity. Among the records set in Scottsdale was the sale of a very special Trans Am, the “Smokey and the Bandit” official promo car, which took to the stage with the legendary Burt Reynolds himself as a passenger. Another Hollywood megastar, William Shatner, was on the auction block in Palm Beach to help sell two cars from his collection.
Thanks to the support and hard work of the Mohegan Sun team and the passionate car enthusiasts in the Northeast, we had the first double sellout in our company’s 45-year history at our inaugural auction in Connecticut. Tickets sold out within hours after gates opened, and the vehicle docket closed well in advance due to strong demand.
We hope everyone liked the changes at our Las Vegas Auction this year. We started things off with an incredible Opening Night Party at Drai’s Nightclub on the Strip, a new venue that was fully embraced by our supporters. It was followed by an exceptional auction in a new site layout at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. We were thrilled to again welcome live television viewers from around the world – we had a great response from fans in Canada, the United Kingdom and beyond.
NINE DAYS FILLED WITH SUPERSTARS AND INCREDIBLE CARS IN SCOTTSDALE
Our upcoming Scottsdale auction promises to keep the excitement in high gear for 2017. The docket of collector cars for Scottsdale is always the center of attention. There will be an eclectic mix of spectacular prewar classics, American muscle, European cars, high-performance vehicles and more than 140 cars from the Charlie Thomas Collection. One of the cars I’m most excited about is the historic CERV 1 belonging to the “Father of the Corvette,” Zora Arkus-Duntov. This vehicle served as Arkus-Duntov’s personal testbed for the Chevrolet Corvette in the 1960s. The docket also has a rare L88 Corvette in LeMans Blue – one of only 116 produced in 1969. More significant vehicles are being added to the docket every day.
We very much look forward to welcoming rock ’n’ roll legend Steven Tyler to the event to auction his rare Hennessey Venom GT Spyder for Janie’s Fund, a charity he established to help girls suffering from the trauma of abuse and neglect. We are honored Steven chose Barrett-Jackson because of our long history of raising funds for charities like his, as well as our committed efforts and ability to bring literally thousands of pre-qualified bidders to the table.
Another first-time visitor to Barrett-Jackson in January will be NASCAR’s famed driver and champion team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr., who will be bringing two cars to the block for charity as well. Those vehicles will join nearly a dozen “cars for a cause” set to sell for philanthropic organizations during the nine-day auction. This auction tradition was started long ago by my father and mother – Russ and Nellie Jackson – and Tom Barrett, and continued by my brother Brian. I am honored to carry on their legacy and make a difference by doing what we can to help those in need.
The Scottsdale auction will also see more than 2,000 automobilia items cross the block at No Reserve – including many outstanding pieces from the Gordon Apker Collection. Gordon, who passed away in February 2016, was a dear friend to many of us at Barrett-Jackson. We are honored to remember his legacy through this colorful selection of neon signs, pedal cars, gas pumps and more – which is as exceptional as the Ron Pratte automobilia collection we auctioned in 2015. Thirteen outstanding vehicles from the Gordon Apker Collection will also be crossing the block throughout the week.
So hold on to that steering wheel and get ready for an exciting ride in 2017. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in Barrett-Jackson’s 46 years of existence, it’s that there are surprises in store and records to be broken. I look forward to every minute of it, and we would be so grateful if you would join us.
