This car was driven by Bobby Unser - 3-time Indy 500 Winner. The 1993 Cadillac Allante was chosen to serve as the pace car for the 1992 Indy 500, the first time since 1973 that Cadillac had held this honor. Called "the world's most powerful front-wheel-drive roadster", the Allante was powered by GM's new 4.6-litre Northstar V8 that turned out 290 hp and 290 lb-ft torque. The Allante paced the race in stock configuration, except for mandatory safety items. Three actual pace cars were built with these safety modifications, with an undetermined number of additional cars used for the 500 Festival Parade.2
Although this was only the third time the Cadillac brand had served as the Indy pace car, it was actually the sixth time a "Cadillac produced" car had paced the race, as the LaSalle pace cars of 1927, 1934, and 1937 were also produced by Cadillac.3 The previous Cadillac pace cars were the 1931 Cadillac 370 and the 1973 Eldorado. 1993 was the final year of production for the Cadillac Allante.
