10 STEPS TO CONSIGNMENT SUCCESS: Selling a vehicle at Barrett-Jackson is an easy process

Join the family and join the fun – the consignment process at Barrett-Jackson is easy to navigate. Here are the basics:
- Complete the preliminary consignment request form, available online at Barrett-Jackson.com. Along with the form, you’ll need to submit the required documentation; a copy of the title; copies of Build Sheets, awards and other relevant paperwork; a minimum of six photos, one of which needs to be the VIN (the more photos the better, so prospective buyers can get a good look at your vehicle even from its online docket listing); and comprehensive short and long descriptions that detail the vehicle’s best attributes. The description you provide will appear on the car card at auction and be read aloud when the car crosses the auction block.
Ensure the title and the vehicle’s VIN match to avoid discrepancy. To limit the amount of possible VIN issues on the auction site, Barrett-Jackson specialists will determine if the VIN is correct and if the stamp/plate are legal for the vehicle to be sold at the event.
- Barrett-Jackson President Steve Davis will assign the vehicle a Lot number, which determines when the vehicle will cross the block. Lot numbers are based on a car’s value and the current vehicle lineup for a specific auction day. Each day begins with entry-level vehicles and proceeds to higher-valued cars during “prime time.”
- After you and the consignment specialist have agreed on the car’s description and Lot number, you’ll sign a contract agreeing to pay a seller’s commission of 8 percent of the hammer price (for No Reserve cars), pay the entry fee (based on the day and time of the Lot number) and submit the actual vehicle title.
- The vehicle will now appear on the online auction docket, available to be viewed by millions on Barrett-Jackson.com. (Early entries will also appear on the online preview docket.)
- Prepare a binder and/or a “storyboard” that can be displayed with the vehicle at the auction site and viewed by potential buyers. This could contain copies of the Build Sheet, awards, photographs of the restoration – anything that would help present your car in the best light and tell its story.
Arrange to transport your vehicle to the auction site. Barrett-Jackson partners with Reliable Carriers (877-744-7889) and TFX International (888-415-3158), or you may make your own arrangements.
- Once your vehicle arrives at the auction site, it is checked in. If paperwork is complete, you do not need to be present; otherwise the car will be placed in a holding area until all required documents are received and the VIN is verified.
- After check-in, the car moves to its display space. Many believe the sale actually “happens” here, as potential buyers almost always inspect the vehicles ahead of time. Consignors or a representative are encouraged to be near their vehicles, with binders or storyboard presentations at hand (see #6), ready to answer questions and engage with interested parties. Well-represented and detailed cars often show (and sell) better, so consignors may want to invest in one of the many washing and detailing services offered on-site by Adam’s Polishes, another valued Barrett-Jackson partner (you can reserve services HERE or call directly at 866-965-0400).
- You may drive your car up onto the auction block or use a Barrett-Jackson provided driver. When the hammer falls and “sold” rings out, ownership changes hands. Sale proceeds are mailed to consignors within 21 banking days.
