Over the past five years, Barrett-Jackson has sold nearly 17,000 vehicles over our auction block. Naturally, the best-represented marques are those from the major U.S. automakers – but of those (excluding vehicles sold for charity), which had bidders digging deepest into their pockets?
1967 CHEVROLET CORVETTE L88 – LOT #5035, 2014 SCOTTSDALE AUCTION – SOLD FOR $3.85 MILLION
In the Bowtie category, the Corvette reigned supreme. Topping the list of best-sellers was an extremely rare 1967 L88, one of just 20 produced and known as the “crown jewel of the Corvettes.” It roared off to its new home at the 2014 Scottsdale Auction for an impressive $3,850,000. In second place for Chevrolets was a race car star – a 1969 model better known as the world-record-holding #57 Rebel Corvette, which sold for $2,860,000, also at the 2014 Scottsdale event. Rounding out the top 3 was a piece of Chevrolet history: the 1960 Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle called CERV 1, which caught the eye of GM officials, who had the winning bid of $1,320,000 at the 2017 Scottsdale Auction. The noteworthy vehicle is now at its new home, the GM Heritage Center in Michigan.
2005 FORD GT SERIAL #003 – LOT #2508, 2015 SCOTTSDALE AUCTION – SOLD FOR $605,000
It was Ford GTs that dominated the Top 10 of the Blue Oval collectibles, with a stunning Quicksilver model carrying Serial #003 from the Ron Pratte Collection leading the pack when it sold at the 2015 Scottsdale Auction for $605,000. Boss 9 fans shouldn’t relent, though – three 1969 Mustang Boss 429s also brought in great results, with one fine example, a Raven Black beauty also from the Ron Pratte Collection, taking the #2 position, bringing in $550,000.
1971 PLYMOUTH HEMI ‘CUDA – LOT #2519, 2015 SCOTTSDALE AUCTION – SOLD FOR $440,000
Not surprisingly, Plymouth HEMI ʼCudas ruled the Mopar class. Top-seller among them was a 1971 yellow and black model from the Ron Pratte Collection that shined at the 2015 Scottsdale Auction, raking in $440,000, while another stunning example from 1971 went home for $396,000 at the 2017 Las Vegas Auction. Any Dodge fans out there? Topping the charts over the past five years in that category was a bright red 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, one of 503 produced in the early summer of 1969 to be ready for the very first NASCAR race at Talladega, where the body style won handily. It sold for $275,000 at the 2018 Scottsdale Auction.
