This 1962 Chevrolet Corvette LS3 Custom Convertible (Lot #722) is one of a cavalcade of Corvettes on the docket for the 15th Annual Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction, April 6-8, 2017.
What’s In A Name?
Myron Scott was hired by Chevrolet in 1937 as an assistant director for the public relations department, and in 1953 he was part of an executive meeting held to determine the name of the new sports car being planned by Chevrolet. Over 300 names were submitted; none would suffice. Scott checked the “C” section of the dictionary at home later that night and found the entry for the naval vessel. When he suggested “Corvette” to the group the next day, they knew their search for a name was over. The new sports car did indeed share the attributes of small size and maneuverability with the lightly armed naval ships. Thus began the land voyage of the Corvette.
