LOT #171 – 1921 OLDSMOBILE “BEVERLY HILLBILLIES’ CUSTOM HOT ROD – SOLD! $165,000
Each Barrett-Jackson auction promises an amazing assortment of collector vehicles, and Day 4 of the 2025 Scottsdale Auction delivered. Movie and TV cars were in the spotlight on Tuesday, Jan. 21, as the majority of the Dr. Stewart A. Berkowitz Collection crossed the block at WestWorld with No Reserve and kept the arena energized throughout the day.
The action kicked off with the sale of several custom-built celebrity golf carts, two of which were designed by the legendary George Barris. Bing Crosby’s (Lot #155.1) sold for $27,500 and ramped up from there with the $37,400 sale of Jackie Gleason’s (Lot #157) and Bob Hope’s (Lot #162.1), which crossed the block for $66,000.
One of the most exciting moments of the day was when the first car hit six figures: a 1989 Chevrolet Corvette “Speed Racer” re-creation (Lot #165.1) that went to its new home for $110,000. The star of the day was a 1921 Oldsmobile custom hot rod used as “Jethro’s Hot Rod” in the “Beverly Hillbillies” TV series (Lot #171) that sold for $165,000. Other top sales from today’s selection from the Berkowitz Collection included a “Munster Koach” re-creation (Lot #169.1) for $100,100, while re-creations of the “Smokey and the Bandit” Patrol Car (Lot #166.1) and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (Lot #168.1) each brought in $77,000.
Aside from the TV and move cars, other vehicles that caught bidders’ attention included a 1953 Chevrolet 3100 custom pickup (Lot #180) for $93,500, a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette convertible (Lot #195) for $93,500 and a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette 283/270 convertible (Lot #186) for $88,000.
The second Barrett-Jackson Cup finalist was revealed Tuesday: a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette built by Streamline Custom Designs for the Castrol “Path to Performance” YouTube series. Owned by Alex Short, the Corvette is powered by a 441ci stroker LS engine built by Wegner Performance and backed by a Bowler Performance 2675E transmission. Each morning the arena glows as the Automobilia Auction lights up the block with the day’s No Reserve neon signs, towering gas pumps and smaller treasures like hood ornaments and gas globes. The top seller of the day’s Automobilia Auction was a 1961 Mobil Oil neon porcelain Pegasus sign (Lot #8499.1) that sold for $46,000. Gas pumps also sparked bidders’ interest, earning spots in the top sales with a 1926 Texaco Oil Wayne Model #615 visible gas pump (Lot #8491.2) for $36,800, followed by a 1920s Standard Oil ”Mae West” Diesel visible gas pump (Lot #8497.1) for $34,500. Another nostalgic favorite this morning was a late 1970s Evel Knievel kiddie ride (Lot #8485), selling for $33,350. A 1950s Around The World Gasoline gas pump globe (Lot #8382) rounded out Tuesday’s Automobilia Auction highlights with its $28,750 sale.
On Sunday, the night before the vehicles took center stage, the auction arena was transformed into a glamorous setting for the Opening Night Gala, as is Barrett-Jackson tradition. The acclaimed Emerald City Band rocked the arena and kept guests dancing all night. A special highlight was the announcement of Barrett-Jackson’s new partnership with the Tunnel to Towers (T2T) Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting U. S. military veterans, first responders and their families. The announcement was punctuated with a powerful appearance by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Ceremonial Unit, the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, and the men and women of the Scottsdale Fire Department. During the moving moments on the stage, Craig Jackson and Steve Davis shared that businessman, philanthropist and longtime Barrett-Jackson supporter Ron Pratte has donated his 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse to be sold at the 2025 Palm Beach Auction, with 100% of the hammer price benefiting T2T.

Of course, the main attraction ‒ the daily Collector Car Auction ‒ will continue on Wednesday, Jan. 22, with over 350 No Reserve collector vehicles in the spotlight.
