The Sunshine State is undoubtedly a great place for car-lovers, especially with its great weather year-round. Florida is home to several major race tracks – most notably the Daytona International Speedway – as well as a dozen or so museums showcasing classic cars, several prestigious annual Concours d’Elegance (Amelia Island, Winter Park and Boca Raton), and is the site of numerous parades, special exhibits featuring antique automobiles and road rallies. The state is also home to the “Birthplace of Speed” – Ormond Beach, where early in the 19th century, on the hard beach sands, racing great such as Ransom E. Olds, Barney Oldfield, Eddie Rickenbacker and Sir Malcolm Campbell set early speed records.
When it comes to collector cars, Floridians love their supercars and exotics – especially those living in South Florida. Among several exotic car events in the southern part of the state, Palm Beach kicks off each year with Supercar Week in January ‒ seven days of races, parties and plenty of opportunities to show off those remarkable high-performance machines. Florida also has an ample share of large exotic car clubs that often have rallies for charity.
Of course, Florida’s beautiful weather was tailor-made for drop-tops. Collectible convertibles are always a big hit at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach event. It comes as no surprise that two Florida locations are considered among the best places to cruise with the top down in the United States: the 16 miles of beautiful, hard-packed beachfront on Daytona Beach (where the first automobile and motorcycle races were held in 1902) and the Overseas Highway – a 113-mile stretch from mainland Florida to Key West.
