INAUGURAL 2023 NEW ORLEANS AUCTION – 1972 CHEVROLET K5 BLAZER CUSTOM SUV – NO RESERVE
The 1972 Chevrolet K5 Blazer is a classic SUV that holds a special place in automotive history. It was the final production year of the first generation of Chevrolet Blazer vehicles, which were produced from 1969 through 1972. The K5 Blazer was designed to compete with other popular SUVs of the time, such as the Ford Bronco and the International Harvester Scout.
Debuting in 1969, the K5 Blazer emerged as a robust SUV, its foundation resting upon the Chevrolet K10 pickup truck platform. Seamlessly blending the realms of off-road capability and on-road luxury, its design was meticulously balanced. The 1972 rendition of the K5 Blazer included a noteworthy innovation: a detachable hardtop roof. This ingenious addition invited open-air excursions, crafting a versatile driving experience. The custom 1972 Chevrolet K5 Blazer to be sold at Barrett-Jackson’s inaugural 2023 New Orleans Auction, September 28-30 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, showcases that removable hardtop, paving the way for a year-round driving adventure without compromise.
In 1972, the K5 Blazer boasted an array of engine choices; however, this specific vehicle is powered by a GM LS3 430-horsepower engine, seamlessly mated with a 4L75E automatic overdrive transmission and the authentic NP205 transfer case. Remarkable enhancements encompass pristine New Old Stock (NOS) front and rear axles featuring 4.11 gears, augmented by a stainless-steel exhaust system. Noteworthy additions comprise lustrous polished headers, a Holley Sniper intake and an impeccably polished front-runner system crafted by Vintage Air. Maintaining optimal temperatures is a DeWitt aluminum radiator, diligently tending to the engine’s cooling needs. Further elevating performance is a stainless-steel fuel tank sourced from Rick’s Hot Rods, with an original GM fuel pump to complete the ensemble.
When the 1973 K5 Blazer hit the streets, it showcased a versatile part-time four-wheel-drive setup, endowing it with the prowess to conquer diverse off-road landscapes. This attribute significantly bolstered its appeal with nature aficionados and individuals seeking a ruggid automobile for professional demands or leisure pursuits. This distinctive iteration offered takes advantage of a tailored 4-inch lift kit, thoughtfully augmented by Fox shocks and fresh leaf springs, boasting a generous 11 leaves per spring to ensure a more supple ride quality.
Facilitating the vital connection between power and traction, the vehicle rests on 315/70R17 Goodyear tires mounted on Mickey Thompson wheels. The crucial task of braking is adeptly managed by a Hydrovac brake booster system, further underscoring its comprehensive engineering.
Exuding a refined exterior, the Blazer showcases a sleek finish, achieved through the application of AXALTA urethane paint. Attention to detail extends beyond the surface – the frame, radiator support, inner fenders and axles receive a durable powder-coat treatment. An exquisite touch is added by the inclusion of a powder-coated steel rollbar, seamlessly integrated with shoulder harness seat belts. The pursuit of perfection led to a comprehensive process that began with a top-to-bottom stripping of the body, followed by meticulous metalwork and epoxy-priming. To safeguard against wear and tear, the floor boasts a protective U-Pol Raptor coating. Prioritizing safety, modern LED headlights and taillights illuminate the path ahead. Meanwhile, the addition of power steps facilitates effortless entry and exit, enhancing convenience without compromising on elegance.
Though engineered to tackle rugged environments, the K5 Blazer’s interior surprisingly embraced a level of comfort befitting its era. With a seating capacity of up to five passengers, it offered conveniences like air conditioning, power steering and power brakes. This customized variant goes beyond, boasting brand-new upholstery, meticulously laid carpet and precise weatherstripping. The inclusion of Dynamat insulation furthers the cabin’s hushed ambiance, complemented by a Vintage Air system for climate control. Commanding the dashboard is a modern Dakota Digital RTX instrument cluster, accompanied by an upgraded Bluetooth flatscreen AM/FM stereo, injecting contemporary functionality. A thoughtful alteration places the driver’s seat 3 inches back, enhancing legroom, while an Ididit tilt steering column adds personalized driving comfort. Notably, this transformation culminated in June 2023 and has journeyed a mere 300 miles since, encapsulating a fresh and invigorating experience.
