Enthusiastic fans were out bright and early this morning as the gates opened on the 46th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction.
Today was Coca-Cola Family Value Day, when children 12 and under could enjoy the event free of charge, so multiple generations of families were out in full force to enjoy all The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction has to offer.
This year’s auction will see the most collector cars ever roll across the block during the event – more than 1,700 – and today’s visitors enjoyed viewing the gleaming vehicles on display throughout the vast auction site. But as any Barrett-Jackson aficionado knows, the extraordinary automobiles are just the beginning.
Guests young and old were fascinated by the interactive displays in the Sponsor Pavilions, enjoyed shopping in the huge Exhibitor Marketplace, checking out the demonstrations in the new DIY Pavilion, taking a heart-stopping spin in the latest Dodge vehicles with a professional driver behind the wheel, and watching gravity-defying Monster Energy BMX presentations on the midway.
For those wanting to experience horsepower of the four-legged variety, two exciting Arena Polo matches took place in the Equidome at the auction site today. A military battle between the United Kingdom and the United States resulted in an 11-8 win for England, but the U.S. triumphed in the prestigious Townsend Cup, taking down the U.K. 18 to 16.
In the auction arena, nearly 400 of the more than 2,000 pieces of automobilia on this year’s docket crossed the block – many hailing from the fine collection of the late Gordon Apker. Among today’s top sellers were a 1940s-50s Texaco Oil service station gas pump, a General Motors GMC Trucks porcelain dealership sign, a Sinclair Diesel gas pump globe from the late 1950s, and – fitting for Coca-Cola Family Value Day – a museum-quality 1930s Coca-Cola three-dimensional bottle sign with wings.
