The excitement and high-octane happenings continued throughout the vast auction site at Mohegan Sun as Barrett-Jackson’s Northeast Auction wrapped up day three in Connecticut, with nearly 250 collector cars and more than 150 pieces of authentic automobilia crossing the block – setting two world records in the process.
Fans packed the Cabaret Theatre in the morning to hear Wayne Carini of “Chasing Classic Cars” talk about car collecting in the first of two complimentary Behind The Hobby symposiums. The second symposium consisted of a panel of experts discussing “The Anatomy of an Ideal Collector Car.” (If you missed Dennis Collins at yesterday’s symposiums, you can watch it HERE.)
Students from Jordan Vocational High School celebrate the $65,000 sale of their 1996 Ford Mustang (Lot #3001) with their instructor Robert Harris, winning bidder Joe Riley, Craig Jackson and Alan Taylor.
Enthusiasts looking to add to their garage décor, embellish their place of business or decorate their man cave had a lot to choose from at this morning’s automobilia auction, which featured many pieces from the Cedarmore Collection – including a large number of Coca-Cola items, dealership signs and service station/diner clocks. Neon signs were the big winners today, with an animated American flag sign (Lot #7299) from the 1950s selling for $16,100, and two others ending up in the top five.
The first of two charity cars had its turn on the auction block today. Lot #3001 is a 1996 Ford Mustang built by students at Jordan Vocational High School in Columbus, Georgia, as part of the Quaker State Best in Class Challenge Program. It sold earlier this year at the Palm Beach Auction and was then donated back by the winning bidders, John and Jeanette Staluppi, to spur additional funds for the Jordan students. This Mustang represents the spirit and enthusiasm of the kids who built it, and the entire hammer price of $65,000 will benefit Jordan Vocational High School and its automotive builders of the future. Even better, winning bidder Joe Riley donated the car back to be auctioned once again in the future to benefit the program.
Collector vehicles in the spotlight today included everything from muscle cars and motorcycles to pickups and Porsches. There was even a 1984 GMC Suburban (Lot #434) that once belonged to baseball great Ted Williams, and – in the “oddities” category – an ice racer from the 1960s (Lot #359.1). Two world records were set, including an exciting $110,000 sale of a 1947 Indian Chief Motorcycle with sidecar (Lot #352), making it the day’s top-selling vehicle.
