Actor Burt Reynolds received a standing ovation as he joined Joseph Mast, Craig Jackson and Steve Davis on the block during today’s auction.
Burt’s back! The Hollywood actor got his first taste of Barrett-Jackson at the 2016 Scottsdale Auction, followed it up with an appearance in Arizona this past January – and couldn’t resist coming to another event in his home state of Florida. This time Reynolds received a standing ovation from the packed house when he came up onstage, bringing with him a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am (Lot #449), a VIN 001 2008 Pontiac G8 (Lot #449.1) and a re-creation of a promotional car from one of his hit movies, “Cannonball Run,” a 1974 Chevrolet Laguna (Lot #449.2).
Lot #5876 – a 1950s restored “Ride Big Bronco” 10-cent coin-operated kiddy ride – sold for $11,500 today.
Those who visited the auction arena early enjoyed a walk down memory lane as nearly 100 authentic pieces of automobilia had their turn on the block. Like yesterday, gas pumps were the big winners of the day – particularly a beautifully restored Gulf Oil filling station visible gas pump (Lot #5888), which sold for $28,750. A “Ride Big Bronco” kiddy ride (Lot #5876) that still works (and plays the theme from “Bonanza”) and a fantastic Coca-Cola vending machine (Lot #5887) – both from the 1950s – were also among the top sellers of the day.
Two more “cars for a cause” crossed the auction block today for charity. The first, Lot #3001, was a 1996 Ford Mustang built by students at Jordan Vocational High School in Georgia, winners of Quaker State’s Best in Class competition. Longtime Barrett-Jackson friends Jeanette and John Staluppi, owners of Florida’s Cars of Dreams Museum, had the winning bid of $50,000, all of which goes right back into supporting the next generation of automotive builders and enthusiasts in the school’s program. Even better, the Staluppis donated the car back for Barrett-Jackson to auction at the upcoming Northeast event, also to benefit the automotive program at Jordan Vocational High School.
The generous team at General Motors donated the very first retail production 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE (Lot #3002) to benefit the United Way. The fastest and most track-capable Chevrolet ever went to none other than NASCAR Hall of Famer and renowned Chevrolet enthusiast Rick Hendrick for $250,000, 100 percent of which goes directly to the worthy cause.
More than 200 collector cars went across the block today, a diverse selection that represented 10 decades of the automobile, from a 1926 Ford Model A custom delivery vehicle (Lot #408) to a 2016 Jeep Wrangler (Lot #380). The top sellers of the day were a 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 convertible (Lot #371), a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air (Lot #392) and a striking Sea-Spray Green 1957 Ford Thunderbird convertible (Lot #425) .
