It’s often been pointed out that Barrett-Jackson is much, much more than a collector car auction. “I’ve never been to anything like this,” one attendee was heard to say on Thursday. “It’s incredible!”

When you attend a Barrett-Jackson event, you often are witnessing history being made. That’s what happened Thursday morning, when Barrett-Jackson CEO Craig Jackson unveiled his restored 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 EXP known as “Little Red.” Once believed destroyed and lost forever, Little Red was discovered in 2018 in rural Texas by Jackson and his team, including restoration specialist Jason Billups. The morning’s unveil also featured Jackson’s 1968 Shelby GT500 prototype known as the “Green Hornet,” and the two innovative vehicles were joined by 2020 Shelby GT500s in matching green and red – a perfect display of how yesterday’s experimental vehicles led to today’s high-performance cars.

In the auction arena, the first two charity cars of this year’s event had their turn on the block. A stunning Chip Foose-designed custom 1968 Plymouth GTX owned by MotorTrend’s Chris Jacobs brought the hammer down on a winning bid of $300,000, 100 percent of which goes to the C4 Foundation, which provides support and services to Navy Seals and their families.

A custom 1981 Jeep CJ7 sold not just once, but three times – with the first two winning bidders generously donating the Jeep back to be sold again, raising a total of $425,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona.

Later, a custom 1981 Jeep CJ7 built by Gas Monkey Garage was in the spotlight, selling not just once, but three times – with the first two winning bidders generously donating the Jeep back to be sold again, raising a total of $425,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona.

Among the nearly 400 vehicles that made their way across the auction block Thursday were those from seven different collections, including the Sam Pack Collection and the Paul Walker Collection. Three of the Walker cars set new auction records with their sales – most notably the 2009 Nissan 370Z used in the film “Fast Five,” which brought in $105,600, making it the highest-priced 370Z to ever sell at auction. A total of 25 new auction sales records were set on Thursday, including a 1989 Nissan Skyline R32 (also from the Paul Walker Collection) that sold for $100,100, as well as a 1977 Ford Bronco and a 1954 Dodge Power Wagon, each of which brought in $110,000.

Thursday’s top-selling vehicles included a stunning 1957 Chevrolet Nomad Station Wagon from the Sam Pack Collection ($143,000), a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 convertible ($121,000) and a 1969 Dodge Super Bee ($117,000).

The morning began with the colorful Automobilia Auction, where Gulf Oil appeared to be the brand to beat. Three stunning, impeccably restored Gulf Oil gas pumps were among the top sellers of the day, led by a 1928 visible gas pump. Soda collectibles remain hot, as evidenced by a Coca-Cola coin-operated soda machine from the 1950s that also was among the top sales.

The Behind The Hobby Collector Car Symposiums (free with admission) continue through the week, with today’s inaugural “Women in the Automotive Industry” panels featuring such movers and shakers as Indy Car racer Lyn St. James, motorcycle racer Valerie Thompson, “All Girls Garage” co-host Bogi Lateiner, McLaren’s Laura Tiller and Bentley’s Erin Bronner.

Tickets are still available (including special-priced Prime-Time tickets for entry after 5 p.m.) for what is shaping up to be a spectacular final three days! Plan to stay late and enjoy all Barrett-Jackson has to offer, with some of the best vehicles crossing the block, over 40 restaurants and food vendors on-site, live music, bar service and more.
