Known as the “Hellcat Miata” or “Hell Kitty,” this custom 1999 Mazda Miata armed with a 6.2-liter V8 Hellcat engine set a new auction record when it sold for $36,300.

The Opening Night Party at Drai’s Nightclub kicked off the 12th Annual Las Vegas Auction in a spectacular way on Wednesday night with an exciting announcement: Chevrolet will be bringing the VIN 001 2020 Corvette Stingray to the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in January to sell for charity. The automaker even brought an example of the new mid-engine sports car to Las Vegas so guests could get a close-up look for themselves.

When the doors opened on the 12th Annual Las Vegas Auction Thursday morning, an eager multitude of collector car enthusiasts streamed into the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, anxious to see what the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions had in store for them this year.

The day didn’t disappoint. The action on the auction block, saw more than 200 examples of collectible cool enjoy their moments in the spotlight. One of the most-anticipated cars of the day was a wild custom 1999 Mazda Miata known as “Hell Kitty.” The bright orange beast with its 6.2-liter Hellcat engine sold for a record price of $36,300.

A number of cars set auction sales records when they sold on Thursday, including a 1959 Chevrolet 3200 custom pickup that brought in $49,500, a 1988 Bentley Continental convertible that left with a sold sticker of $41,250 and a 2002 Lotus Esprit, which went to its new home for $48,400. A 1965 Cobra re-creation roadster and a 1932 Chevrolet Confederate Deluxe roadster and a 1959 Willys Overland pickup were among the top sales of the day.

The most important car sold on Thursday was a custom 2009 Ford Mustang known as “AV8R,” a one-off aviation-themed vehicle created by key Mustang design and engineering executives, with performance support from Ford Racing. The entire $40,000 sale price for this very special car went directly to Reach Out Worldwide (ROWW), founded by the late actor Paul Walker in response to the massive earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. ROWW professionals augment local expertise when natural disasters strike, in order to accelerate relief efforts.

Guests explored the many displays from a wide variety of sponsors, shopped in the vast Exhibitor Marketplace and got their breath taken away as they sped around the track at the Toyota and Dodge Thrill Rides. There was also ample opportunity to check out not only the hundreds of vehicles destined for the auction block during the week, but also get a special preview of cars headed to the 49th Annual Scottsdale Auction in January – including some vehicles from the Paul Walker Collection. Another highlight for visitors was a chance for an up-close look at a brand-new 2020 Corvette Stingray – with VIN 001 heading to the 2020 Scottsdale Auction to sell for charity.

More than 100 pristine pieces of the past had their turn on the block Thursday morning during the Automobilia Auction, from porcelain signs and soda collectibles to light-up service station clocks and pedal cars. It was number of impeccably restored gas pumps reigned supreme for the day’s sales, with four examples winding up in the top 10, led by a rare 1946 Mobil Oil M/S 80 model.
