From the moment stunt and race driver Rhys Millen roared into Reno in the bright yellow Pennzoil Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat to deliver the Barrett-Jackson Cup, it was clear this year’s Hot August Nights Auction presented by Barrett-Jackson was going to be one to remember.
This 1950s Mobil Oil Pegasus porcelain with animated neon service station sign (Lot #6593) was one of the top-selling pieces of automobilia, going for $16,800.
The growing popularity of automobilia, as witnessed by the world record sales at the 2015 Scottsdale Auction, prompted Barrett-Jackson to kick off the Reno Tahoe auction with an entire day devoted to the unique collectible pieces of history. The result was the most successful Reno automobilia auction to date, with a 36-percent increase in sales over 2014. A number of stunning neons were the biggest sellers, with gas pumps, kiddy rides and dealership signs also pulling in impressive numbers.
The auction site was constantly buzzing and full of excitement as more than 40,000 car enthusiasts – up 7 percent over last year – were on hand for the auction of over 400 automobilia items and 232 collector cars. Friday’s crowd shattered a single-day attendance record for the Reno Tahoe auction, and there were more bidders than ever before.
Collector cars started rolling on Friday and finished big on Saturday, resulting in a 100-percent sell-through rate and several notable highlights:
This much-talked-about A.O. Smith-bodied 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible (Lot #617) sold for $214,500.
The distinctive “Mellow Yellow” 1934 Ford Model A Custom Roadster (Lot #634) attracted a lot of attention and ended up going to its next owner for $148,500.
The Sublime Green 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat (Lot #643) from the Robertson Collection caused a stir when it sold for $88,000 – above retail.
A 1932 Ford B-400 Custom Boyd Convertible (Lot #625) – the last project worked on by the legendary Boyd Coddington before he passed away – went for $181,500.
This pristine 1955 Chevrolet Nomad Custom Wagon (Lot #638) from the Robertson Collection sold for $154,000.
A rare 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 (Lot #637) roared across the block and into the garage of its new owner for that sold for $154,000.
An extraordinary 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Custom (Lot #640) from the Robertson Collection rang the bell at $137,500.
Not something you see every day, this fully tricked-out 1956 Ford F-600 Custom Pickup (Lot #646) wowed the crowd and went to its new home for $143,000.
