When you see a Black Series on the road, it’s hard to believe that it rolled off the assembly line the way it did. Yes — it comes from the factory with those huge fender flairs — they aren’t part of a super aggressive body kit. And yes, it does sound like that from the factory without any modifications or tuning. The car is a beast right out of the box.
The Black Series is marked as the most hardcore of any of its cars for Mercedes-Benz. It represents the performance limit, where everything possible is drawn out of that model, and everything that can be achieved with driving technology at that point in time is put on the road.
During the 2022 Las Vegas Auction, a 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series will be offered with No Reserve from Jason “Captain America” Britton, a widely recognized sport bike freestyle stunt rider. Sponsored by Monster Energy and Kawasaki, Britton has been the host of two shows on the Speed Channel, worked as a stunt double in various movies and commercials and has appeared in music videos for Nicki Minaj, among others.
The car offered is one of 350 examples produced in total, and one of 175 designated for the U.S. market.
Created towards the end of the SL-Class R230 platform’s production run, the SL65 AMG Black Series shares only its doors and side mirrors with its base car, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG. All the body panels were replaced with carbon fiber reinforced plastic panels and AMG Performance Studio engineers widened the front of the car by 4.5-inches and 4.1-inches at the rear. The standard car’s hardtop convertible roof was replaced with a fixed carbon fiber roof with an integrated roll bar. After slapping on a massive rear spoiler, the Black Series weighs 550 pounds less than the standard SL65 AMG.
The SL65 AMG Black Series offers more than looks, though. It received bigger turbos, a bigger intercooler, a new exhaust system and a remapped ECU which gave the hand-assembled twin turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine a 10% horsepower increase over the stock SL65 AMG, bumping it up to 670 horsepower. As a result, the Black Series will hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds despite the top speed electronically limited to 199 mph.
This staggering power is sent to the rear wheels by way of a paddle-shifted five-speed automatic transmission complete with manual mode and rev-matching, with a multiple-disc limited-slip differential at the rear with a 40% locking effect.
The AMG Performance Studio experts gave the SL65 AMG Black Series adjustable coilover suspension, slotted and drilled brake rotors and 19-inch and 20-inch forged AMG wheels.
This particular 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is currently wrapped in Matte Green with the original black exterior paint hidden underneath.
The interior of the SL65 AMG Black Series is suitably black with an Alcantara headliner and carbon-fiber interior trim perfect at providing those genuine race car vibes we all love while remaining comfortable enough for daily driving with features like dual-zone automatic climate control, Keyless Go and COMAND with navigation.
