MAKING HEADLINES: Record-setting vehicles at Barrett-Jackson’s 2016 Scottsdale Auction

This 1977 Trans Am (Lot #7004) used as the promo car for the hit ’70s film “Smokey & The Bandit,” roared across the block with the movie’s star Burt Reynolds riding shotgun and sold for a published auction records of $550,000.
As the old adage goes, records are made to be broken.
Eight cars crossing the block at Barrett-Jackson’s 45th Anniversary Auction in Scottsdale proved that statement. Within all of the exciting moments at the 2016 event, these exceptional vehicles rocked the house when the gavel fell on record prices for each.
Lot #1392 – a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach – broke records when it sold for $1,760,000.
The auction’s top seller was also proved to be a big record-breaker: a rare 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder (Lot #1392) with a Weissach Package and only 595 original miles sold for a whopping $1.76 million.
It was certainly the Trans Am’s time to shine, with a silver 1979 10th Anniversary Edition (Lot #763.1) pulling in $187,000 – a new auction record for any 1979 Pontiac. But the Trans Am train didn’t stop there. The 1977 T/A used as the official promo car for the hit film “Smokey and the Bandit” (Lot #7004), with the film’s star Burt Reynolds riding shotgun, rolled across the block for $550,000 ‒ a record for any Trans Am of any year.
Two stunning Talbot-Lagos on the docket set auction records for cabriolets of their model year: a 1939 T-15 Cabriolet (Lot #1378) went for $550,000 and a 1947 T-26 Worblaufen Cabriolet (Lot #1383) sold for $715,000.
One of only 2,261 produced between 1991 and 1994, a yellow 1992 Ferrari 512TR (Lot #1396.1) with only 901 miles on the clock brought in $357,500, which was a record for any 512TR.
A new auction record for a 1972 Corvette ZR1 was made when this Elkhart Green model (Lot #1332) crossed the block for $192,500.
Often said to be one of the most sought-after Corvettes in the marque’s history with the rarest small-block ever built, an Elkhart Green 1972 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (Lot #1332) – one of only 20 made that year – sold for $192,500, which was a record for a ’72 ZR1.
Derived from the Dodge 3/4-ton WC-series World War II military trucks, the Power Wagon was introduced in 1946 as the first civilian 4×4. Two of these notable trucks crossed the block at the Scottsdale Auction, bringing a record-setting price for any Power Wagon sold at auction – a 1944 model (Lot #1061) and a 1962 model (Lot #496) each sold for $187,000.
With 1,469 cars selling for over $102 million at a 99-percent sell-through rate and these eight records set, Barrett-Jackson’s 2016 Scottsdale Auction was one of the company’s most successful auctions in its 45-year history**.**

Dodge Power Wagons proved popular, with this 1944 model (Lot #1061) selling for $187,000.
