This 1941 Nash Ambassador (Lot #166.1) was among the record-breakers on Tuesday.
“This was the car to beat back in the day,” said one man to his wife. “My mom used to drive one of these,” recalled another. Picking up on conversations around the event site at WestWorld of Scottsdale makes it clear that Barrett-Jackson is so much more than an auction – it’s an opportunity to share memories, make new ones and to celebrate how cars really are such an important part of our life stories.
The thousands of car enthusiasts visiting the 2020 Scottsdale Auction on Tuesday learned about the future of automotive media at the first Behind The Hobby Collector Car Symposium of the week. They shopped for amazing products and discovered the latest automotive developments at more than 300 sponsor and exhibitor displays. They watched over 300 authentic automobilia pieces and more than 180 collector cars take their turn on the famous Barrett-Jackson stage, where eight more record-breaking sales were made.
Among those record-breakers Tuesday were a 1963 Ford Galaxie Custom Wagon, a 1930 Oldsmobile Deluxe Coupe, a 1941 Nash Ambassador and a 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62. Vehicles that had the bidders raising their hands with enthusiasm included a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Custom Hardtop, a 1952 Volkswagen Beetle Split-Window Coupe, a 1952 Kaiser henry J Custom Coupe and a 1972 Oldsmobile 442 Re-creation Convertible.
This Husky Oil porcelain sign (Lot #8294) from the 1940s-50s sold for $57,500 on Tuesday.
Signs of all shapes and sizes were the big winners at the morning’s Automobilia Auction, with a remarkable Husky Oil porcelain sign selling for $57,500 and a striking Frontier Gasoline porcelain sign from the 1940s going to its new home for $25,300 – proving once again how smaller, regional brands like Husky and Frontier are among the most coveted automobilia collectibles. Neon signs were also popular sellers on Tuesday, with an extremely rare Chevrolet Genuine Parts sign from the 1930s-40s selling for $25,300 and a Buick Automobiles example from the 1940s-50s bringing in $23,000.
One of the perks for bidders and consignors at Barrett-Jackson events is the annual Opening Night Gala, and this year’s Scottsdale Gala was one to remember! Check out the video below to see what it’s like – as well as a photo gallery showing some highlights from Tuesday’s collector car and automobilia auctions, as well as moments around the site that caught our photographers’ eyes.
