When it comes to fine automobiles, Ferrari and Porsche are arguably among the world’s finest, whether on the racetrack or on the street. At the 14th Annual Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction in April, two sterling examples of the marques are revving their engines in anticipation of crossing the famous stage.

1968 Ferrari 330 GTC

1968 Ferrari 330 GTC_Front_3-4Introduced at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, the Ferrari 330 GTC filled the gap between the sporting 275 GTB and the more luxurious 330 GT 2+2. This 1968 Ferrari 330 GTC, chassis 11427, was first owned by Clemento Ravetto, who took delivery in September 1968, according to noted Ferrari historian Marcel Massini. The matching-numbers car stayed in Italy through its second owner and was then exported to the United States in 1972. The car returned to Europe in the 1980s and, following a repaint in red, was purchased by a Ferrari collector in Switzerland and stayed in his private collection for over 30 years.

Following its recent purchase, chassis 11427 was shipped directly to Canada for a full service and mechanical refurbishment. The carburetors were rebuilt; the air conditioning, heater, and brakes were serviced; new rear shocks and new tailpipes were fitted; the fuel pump was rebuilt and four new Michelin tires were fitted. The engine was also fully serviced, the heads were removed and reconditioned, the water pump was rebuilt and new oil filters were installed.

1984 Porsche 935 DP

1984 Porsche 930 DPEleven years after the Ferrari 330 GTC was introduced in Geneva, pundits were taking note of the Kremer Racing 935 K3, which made history by winning the 1979 24 Hours of LeMans outright. The famed race car was clothed in aerodynamic bodywork designed and fabricated by Ekkehard Zimmermann’s Designer Plastics Automobilbau in Germany. By then DP Motorsports, as it is widely known, had been manufacturing and supplying lightweight body panels for racing Porsches for several years, beginning with the Kremer 911 2.8 RSR that debuted at Daytona in 1973, and it has since built a reputation as one of the world’s top Porsche tuners. That reputation has its founding in part in the creation of road-going Porsches modified to replicate the mighty 935 racers that dominated international sports racing through the 1970s and 1980s.

The new interior incorporates period-correct DP “lollipop” racing seats, a padded Momo steering wheel and VDO/DP gauges. Each DP 935 began life as a 930 Turbo before undergoing an extensive transformation that included a ducted front apron, slanting nose with retracting headlights, wide fender flares connected by body-side running boards and a king-size rear spoiler. The October 1983 issue of VW and Porsche Magazine named the DP 935 the fastest street-legal car of the year, and Car and Driver nominated it as one of the five fastest of the entire decade, citing its 0-to-60 time of 4.6 seconds, 10.5-second thrust to 100 mph and 12.8-second quarter-mile time, all thanks to its DP-modified Stage 2 turbo engine.

There will undoubtedly be some heads turning in April as these two exceptional examples of European automaking roar onto the Barrett-Jackson auction block.
