Lot 726 - 2016 LAMBORGHINI HURACAN GT3 RACE CAR_sideLamborghini’s raging bull is not to be confused with the prancing equine of Maranello. The 2018 battle in the GTD class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship made that point clear. Lamborghini’s Huracán GT3 handily bested the competition and marked the first time the team, drivers and manufacturer would claim the gold and climb to the highest step of the podium.

It was a signature moment for the house Ferruccio Lamborghini built. Badged No. 48, the 2016 Huracán GT3, piloted by Madison Snow and Bryan Sellers, also saw victories at the 2018 12 Hours of Sebring and the Northeast Grand Prix, while placing third at the 24 Hours of Daytona. In all, the Lambo claimed six podiums out of the season’s 11 races. Lot 726 - 2016 LAMBORGHINI HURACAN GT3 RACE CAR_EngineThe Huracán GT3 is a landmark for the Raging Bull. Bred for competition, the car was developed by Lamborghini’s in-house racing division, “Squadra Corse,” making it the first factory racing car developed by Sant’Agata Bolognese to feature FIA compliance. Underneath the skin, the GT3 uses the same carbon-fiber reinforced aluminum chassis as the roadgoing Huracán, combined with a fully integrated FIA-spec roll cage to maximize torsional rigidity and occupant safety. Sitting behind the driver is a modified version of the roadgoing Huracán’s direct-injected 90-degree V10. The naturally aspirated 5.2-liter engine uses a Bosch Motorsport control unit that also manages the traction control system, gearbox and TFT display on the instrument panel. The rear-wheel drive racer uses a Hör 6-speed sequential gearbox with a three-disc racing clutch. Fresh from competition, the No. 48 has been thoroughly gone over and refreshed in preparation for its new owner.

Lot 726 - 2016 LAMBORGHINI HURACAN GT3 RACE CAR_frontEvery facet of the car’s design was aimed at the merciless pursuit of speed. Lamborghini went so far as to partner with the racing wizards at Dallara when developing the car’s bodywork, aerodynamics and suspension. Under the direct supervision of Gian Paolo Dallara – the company’s founder – the aggressively flared carbon Kevlar bodywork was sculpted by decades of engineering and racing know-how. Compared to the road car, the body of this fighting bull is all-new, with only the roof section, head and taillight assemblies remaining unchanged. The result: beautifully fluid aerodynamics, pinning the 2,700-pound Huracán to the road with nearly 1,400 pounds of downforce at speed, all while effortlessly carving through the air on its way toward 200 mph.

Lot 726 - 2016 LAMBORGHINI HURACAN GT3 RACE CAR_spoilerThe massive rear spoiler is fully adjustable, and every contour, flange and inlet take advantage of the wind for maximum performance. The Huracán uses a set of Brembo Racing brakes. Built to the highest caliber of endurance motorsport, the steel brakes feature a supplementary cooling system for continued peak performance long into the night, measuring 380mm up front with 6-piston calipers and 355mm at the rear with 4-piston calipers. A Bosch Motorsport ABS system boasts 12 settings that can be selected by the driver using a button on the steering wheel. In true race-car fashion, an onboard pneumatic lift system raises the car during pit stops, allowing the crew to change the massive 315-section front and 325-section rear tires.

Lot 726 - 2016 LAMBORGHINI HURACAN GT3 RACE CAR_instrumentsLike the exterior, the cabin is all business as well. A suite of buttons and toggles rest on the U-shaped steering wheel at the driver’s fingertips. The carbon-framed bucket seats remain fixed to the chassis for better weight distribution – though the pedal box and steering column are adjustable, allowing drivers of all sizes to sit comfortably behind the wheel.

When this race car rolls across the block at the Barrett-Jackson 2020 Fall Auction, just remember – this champion from Sant’Agata is ready to once again take one lucky bidder to the top step of the podium. Bid well.
