STARGAZING: Vehicles with celebrity ties always attract attention at auction

At every Barrett-Jackson auction, the chance that a collector car once owned by a well-known person will roll across the block is almost a given. From athletes and actors to rock stars and royalty, the celebrity factor is always in play at The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, and Barrett-Jackson’s inaugural Northeast Auction will be no exception.

All signs point to 2016 being a good year for Dodge Power Wagons, given the record-setting success of two such models at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale Auction in January and a 1957 unrestored model selling for a solid price in Palm Beach this spring. Coming up at the inaugural Northeast Auction, we will see what happens when the ruggedness of a Power Wagon is blended with the rugged good looks of film and television actor Tom Selleck. Selling for No Reserve in this June is a pristine 1953 Dodge Power Wagon pickup (Lot #633) once owned by Selleck, best known for his 1980s role as the Hawaii-based private investigator Thomas Magnum in the television series “Magnum, P.I.” This bright-red beauty has less than 19,000 miles on the odometer and is powered by a 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual transmission. Perfect for riding the range or turning heads on Main Street, it also features a PTO winch and water pump for drawing from a stagnant source – not to mention all documentation from Selleck’s ownership.

It’s no surprise that Stray Cats lead singer Brian Setzer owns a 1957 Bel Air, considering that the band he formed – which catapulted onto the music scene in the ’80s – had a style based on artists from the 1950s. You can just picture the three members of this rockabilly band cruising around in this cool convertible. Crossing the Northeast auction block at No Reserve, this factory-black 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air (Lot #637) has had a body-off-frame, rotisserie restoration using only NOS and original GM parts, and it shows. The Onyx Black exterior gleams and offers a perfect contrast to the Matador Red interior, where you can slide behind the wheel and put the 283ci V8 engine and Powerglide automatic transmission through its paces. Carefully selected from a climate-controlled museum in Kansas, the car has travelled only 40,000 miles in its life and also features dual exhaust, shaded glass, electric wipers and fender skirts.

Rockabilly star Brian Setzer of Stray Cats is bringing his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible (Lot #637) to auction.

With a Facebook fan base of more than 2 million and more than 260,000 Twitter followers, Richard Rawlings of Gas Monkey Garage is clearly a favorite among gearheads. Known best as the star of Discovery Channel’s reality show “Fast N’ Loud,” Rawlings is bringing an even dozen of his vehicles to Barrett-Jackson’s very first Northeast Auction at Mohegan Sun – from a custom 1941 Lincoln Zephyr convertible (Lot #741) and a ’55 T-bird (Lot #355) to a 1989 Lamborghini Countach (Lot #638) and a custom 2005 Ford GT (Lot #643). And if you’re one of his big fans, take note: all signs point to Rawlings being on hand to see his cars enjoy the spotlight on the Barrett-Jackson stage.
