Super power in a supercar: the V10 engine in this 2005 Porsche Carrera GT (Lot #400) kicks out over 600hp.
If you ask 10 different automotive experts what a supercar is, you’d probably get 11 different answers – and it is a definition that constantly changes as technology changes the playing field. But most would agree on some commonalities, such as high power, high performance and high style.
This 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (Lot #406) is one of the stars of this year’s Supercar Showcase at the Palm Beach Auction.
“Supercars are mystic creatures that stalk empty backroads where they can’t be bothered by lesser machines,” once said Jeff Glucker, Executive Editor of Hooniverse, when asked for his definition. “They inhabit our hearts, our minds … and the posters of the walls belonging to our younger selves.”
Those mystic creatures have always been perfectly at home at Barrett-Jackson, long an exceptional outlet for selling exotic collector cars. In fact, the company set a new auction record with the $1.76-million-sale of a spectacular 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach at the 2016 Scottsdale Auction.
For Barrett-Jackson, the definition of a supercar means rare and exotic high-performance collector cars, old and new. It may include vehicles that were considered supercars of their day. Hypercars are often incorporated into the mix, as well as exotic classic sports cars. Over the years, Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach Auction has served as a particularly powerful magnet for the supercar set. With that in mind, a very special Supercar Showcase debuted at the auction in 2015, featuring select vehicles that included the likes of a 1989 Lamborghini Countach, a 2004 Aston Martin Vanquish and a 2009 Spyker C8 Laviolette.
This 1983 Ferrari 512 BBi (Lot #383) will be featured in the Supercar Showcase at the Palm Beach Auction.
At the 2016 Palm Beach Auction, the Supercar Showcase is back, and will be bigger and better than ever, featuring a selection of more than a dozen exceptional vehicles of high caliber and high horsepower. In the spotlight will be a selection of sexy Ferraris, some pristine Porsches (including two Carrera GTs), two Lamborghinis, a rare low-mileage Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and two impressive Ford GT Heritage Editions – one of which has less than 5 actual miles on the clock.
