2022 Barrett-Jackson Cup Ultimate Best In Show 1936 Ford Roadster.
Car collector and aficionado Bob Johnson has been angling to win the Barrett-Jackson Cup since its 2013 inception at the Reno-Tahoe Auction. In 2021, when The Cup competition took place at the Scottsdale Auction, Johnson’s 1932 Ford was chosen as a Top 5 finalist.
However, this year, Johnson was determined to win the Ultimate Best In Show, and he brought just the car to do it. Initially built for land speed racer George Poteet by Pinkee’s Rod Shop in Windsor, CO, under Eric Peratt, the 1936 Ford Roadster has earned such awards as America’s Most Beautiful Roadster at the 2019 Grand National Roadster Show, 2019 Goodguys Most Beautiful Street Rod and the 2019 SEMA Ford Design Award. Now, it can add the Barrett-Jackson Cup to its lofty list of accolades.
This ’36 Ford Roadster is frequently referred to as the “3 Penny Roadster.” The name comes from its custom PPG Chocolate Milk color and a story from Poteet’s youth. He remembers that he and his sister would save up 3 cents to purchase chocolate milk in the school cafeteria. There are three 1936 copper pennies implanted into the rear license area as a salute to those early days.
The roadster is powered by a 351 Windsor engine machined by AMS and built by Jesser Automotive of Fort Collins, CO, hooked to a TREMEC TKO 600 5-speed manual transmission. Body modifications included moving the front fenders forward 2 inches and adding a more pronounced peak in them to hold the one-off Curtis Speed wheels. The wheelbase was stretched 3 inches, the windshield was chopped 2 inches, and the top was chopped 3 inches. A custom-crafted 4-piece hood with a center hinge crowns this exceptional build.
Congratulations go out to Johnson. The Cup is a fierce competition and taking home the Ultimate Best in Show is more than a prestigious award – it’s a talisman representing the countless hours spent under the hood and in the shop – imagining, creating, building and ultimately knowing that you have what it takes to win.
