THE FIRST GAVEL FALLS: Collector cars begin their journey across the auction block

After a rousing Opening Night Gala on Sunday night that kicked off in style with a marching band, the sun rose on a picture-perfect Monday at the 49th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction.
A bidder favorite Monday was this 1929 Ford Model A Roadster (Lot #51).
From the moment the first vehicle – a 1970 Honda Z50 Custom Minibike – crossed the block, bidders and car enthusiasts packed the auction arena to witness nearly 100 vehicles, all selling with No Reserve, go off to their new homes. They represented 10 decades of automotive history, from a 1926 Chevrolet pickup to a 2018 Meyers Manx Dune Buggy. The day’s diverse offerings included Hondas and Hummers, Jeeps and Jaguars, Packards and Porsches – and even four record-setters: a 1984 Ford Mustang SVO, a 1966 Dodge D-100 custom pickup, a 1970 International Travelall and a 1988 Toyota SR5 pickup. Among the bidder favorites of the day were a 1929 Ford Model A Roadster, a 1995 Hummer H1 and a 1965 Ford Mustang.
The morning began with the Barrett-Jackson Automobilia Auction, where 381 authentic pieces of the past had their turn in the spotlight. Bidders Monday were particularly drawn to a pair of porcelain signs – Mobilgas and Hudson Service examples from the 1940s – as well as a number of brightly colored neon signs and superbly restored vintage gas pumps, including a Shell Oil visible gas pump from 1927.
Many don’t realize what an undertaking it is to put on a Barrett-Jackson auction – especially this year’s largest-ever Scottsdale event. Check out the video below for a behind-the-scenes look at how our team transformed WestWorld of Scottsdale into a mecca for car enthusiasts and collectors, as well as a photo gallery of Monday highlights from around the vast auction site.
