1964 Jaguar XKE Series 1 roadster

Among the vehicles being offered as part of the Sam Pack Collection at the 2020 Scottsdale Auction is this 1964 Jaguar XKE Series 1 roadster (Lot #1390.1).

Barrett-Jackson is excited to bring forward an extensive collection of important cars spanning multiple genres and eras from the well-known Sam Pack Collection. More than a century of automotive generations and innovations, from Dearborn to Coventry ‒ and even Stuttgart ‒ are included and ready to cross the block in Scottsdale. “We’re absolutely delighted to bring this incredible collection of cars to Scottsdale,” Craig Jackson said. “The diversity of cars represented in this collection is what Barrett-Jackson is all about, celebrating the love of the automobile.”

The diverse offering includes 1950s and ’60s icons, a portfolio of modern and classic Detroit muscle, and an assortment one-off hot rods, bespoke customs and modern collectibles. Kirkham Cobras, an ’89 Porsche 911 Speedster, Britain’s finest Jaguars and similarly rare vehicles of quality highlight the collection. Pack is known for an uncanny ability to source, restore and maintain his collection, enjoying a years-long devotion to the automobile and the freedom it entails.

GERMAN ENGINEERING

Lot #1390 - 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster

Lot #1390 – 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster

Perfectly suited for the racetrack or a spirited drive on a bendy canyon road is a 1989 911 Porsche Speedster (Lot #1390), one of just 823 delivered to the United States. This stunning Speedster is powered by an air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-6 engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. This variant of the 911 was coincidentally introduced at the same time as the model’s 25th anniversary and pays homage to the legendary Porsche 356 Speedster racing cars of the 1950s. The 911 Speedster sports a removable raked and frameless windshield, and the front quarter-windows were removed entirely. At the rear, a twin-humped fiberglass tonneau replaces the back seats. The ’89 Speedster features the flared bodywork of the 911 Turbo with that integrated the fog lights into the new front spoiler. Stopping power is provided by a set of power-assisted ventilated disc brakes mounted at all four corners. This Speedster is presented in Grand Prix White with a red leather interior.

Another Porsche in the collection is a 2008 Cayman S (Lot #807.1) built for the circuit, which underwent a heart transplant: Power comes from a 3.8-liter flat-6 engine from the 911. Finished in Speed Yellow, this Cayman fields a spartan track-focused interior. A full cage with bucket racing seats holds the driver in place, while out back a spoiler keeps the slippery Porsche pinned to the road.

FROM ACROSS THE POND

Lot #1390.1 - 1964 Jaguar XKE Series 1

Lot #1390.1 – 1964 Jaguar XKE Series 1

A trio of exquisite cats emerge from Britain’s Midlands, each a technical marvel of the era ‒ and one called “the most beautiful car ever built” by Enzo Ferrari himself. Of course, we’re talking about Jaguars here. If it isn’t a high crime, it’s certainly a misdemeanor to not discuss the incredible Malcolm Sayer-designed bodywork of the XKE (E-Type). The 3.8-liter DOHC inline-6 engine purrs and snarls as it sends power to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual gearbox. Crossing the block as Lot #1390.1, this matching-numbers 1964 Jaguar Series I OTS (Open Two-Seater) is an unrestored example just shy of 30,000 original miles.

The next two cats from the Sam Pack Collection prowling on the docket are both award-winning concours-ready XK120s. First up, a 1954 Jaguar XK120 Drophead Coupe (Lot #1077) that is one of 1,472 left-hand-drive examples built and one of just 466 produced with the Special Equipment Package, and a 3.4-liter DOHC inline-6 engine that sends 210 horses to the rear through 4-speed manual gearbox. This XK120 is a concours show-winner, placing First in Class at the 2013 Jaguar Club of America with a remarkable 99.9 out of 100 points.

Lot #1077.1 - 1952 Jaguar XK120

Lot #1077.1 – 1952 Jaguar XK120

Rounding out the trio is a matching-numbers 1952 XK120 Jaguar Fixed-Head Coupe (Lot #1077.1), motivated by a 160hp DOHC 3.4-liter inline-6 engine with double SU carburetors mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox. This XK120 was owned by the “First Lady of Drag Racing,” Shirley Muldowney, and includes a letter written by her. Additionally, this XK120 has won several First Place and Best in Class Awards. All three of these stunning Midlands-born racers feature a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate.

For those more inclined to open-air luxury drives, two palatial British 4-seater convertibles are at your service. A 1978 Rolls-Royce Corniche (Lot #808) is a striking example of fine machinery, period-correct down to the AM/FM radio with 8-track player. The ultimate in open-top grand touring, a 1996 Bentley (Lot #808.1) is powered by a turbocharged 6.75-liter V8 engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 385hp and 553 ft/lbs of torque. The Azure is capable of a 6.5-second sprint to 60 mph and on to a top speed of 150 mph.

THE SHELBY LEGACY

Lot #1389.2 - 1965 Shelby Cobra CSX 7000 Roadster

Lot #1389.2 – 1965 Shelby Cobra CSX 7000 Roadster

Wearing the FIA fender flairs, cut-back doors and finished in polished aluminum is another star of the Sam Pack offering: A continuation CSX 7000 Series Cobra from 1965 (Lot #1389.2), hand-picked by Carroll Shelby for his personal collection. This car, CSX7049 is motivated by a 427ci V8 engine sporting a Holley 4-barrel carburetor sending power to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 427 breathes through a set of white-painted side-exit exhaust pipes. Accompanying this car is the Shelby American’s Statement of Origin signed by the legendary Carroll Shelby. This beautiful Cobra marks an incredible opportunity to own, drive and race one of Carroll Shelby’s personal vehicles come the 2020 Scottsdale Auction.

The Sam Pack Collection also brings forward a duo of modern Shelbys: a 2017 GT350 (Lot #810.1) and a very low-mile GT350R from 2016 (Lot #510). Each is powered by the screaming flat-plane crank 5.2-liter Voodoo engine and backed by a 6-speed manual gearbox. Clad in carbon-fiber and sticky Michelin rubber, these track-ready snakes are just itching to be unleashed.

Lot #1079 - 1966 Ford GT40 Re-creation

Lot #1079 – 1966 Ford GT40 Re-creation

The legacy of Carroll Shelby wouldn’t be complete without the GT40. Built to replicate the all-conquering 1966 Ford GT40, a CAV GT re-creation (Lot #1079) in this collection is based on the MK1 GT40. Power comes from a Keith Craft 347ci V8 engine with AFR cylinder heads mated to a 6-speed Getrag manual transmission. The spaceframe chassis uses Wilwood disc brakes at all four corners and features 15-inch BRM wheels. The Guardsman Blue bodywork is adorned with Wimbledon White racing stripes.

AMERICAN MUSCLE

Lot #811 - 1970 Dodge Super Bee

Lot #811 – 1970 Dodge Super Bee

The menacing Super Bee features is finished in black over a black leather interior and a red bumblebee stripe is draped over the rear end.

Also flexing its muscle in Scottsdale will be a 1963 Galaxie 500XL (Lot #512.1), ready to take on the Milky Way with its 405hp G-Code 406ci V8 up front and 4-speed manual ready to engage lightspeed.

It’s powered by a 351ci Windsor V8 engine mated to a C4 automatic transmission.
