The sale of this 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 10th Anniversary Edition (Lot #763.1) shattered records, selling for $187,000.
The beautiful Arizona weather and some fantastic collector cars made for a bustling auction site and arena on the sixth day of Barrett-Jackson’s 45th Anniversary auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale. One of most exciting moments of the day was when a 1979 Pontiac Firebird 10th Anniversary model Trans Am with only 8 miles on the clock rolled onto the block and shattered records. The audience in the standing-room-only arena began to cheer as the price rose beyond yesterday’s $110,000 winning bid on a 1980 model. But still the bids kept coming, and when the hammer came down to a winning bid of $170,000 ($187,000 all-in) – a new record at auction – the crowd went wild. The Trans Am train won’t stop there. Barrett-Jackson has created the “perfect storm” with more special models to come in the days ahead, including four Super Duty cars and the actual 1977 “Smokey and the Bandit” promo car – with the movie’s star Burt Reynolds looking on.

Earlier in the day, more authentic automobilia items went across the block and two “Beyond the Block” Collector Car Symposiums were held, providing enthusiasts with tips on how to sell a collector car and more. Tomorrow’s symposium – which is free with admission to the auction – will feature Barrett-Jackson’s team of automotive experts, who will provide an advanced look into the world of collector cars.
Some well-known faces were in attendance today, including actor Frankie Muniz; Miss Hurst Golden Shifter Linda Vaughn; former NBA player Daniel Gadzuric; MLB players Adam Eaton, Marco Estrada, Jacob Ellsbury and Paul Konerko; and NASCAR greats Jeff Gordon, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.
Three more vehicles were auctioned for charity today with 100 percent of the hammer price going directly to the worthy causes. They included Brad Keseloski’s 2012 Dodge Charger NASCAR race car (Lot #3002), which hammered at $150,000 to benefit Paralyzed Veterans of America; a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 (Lot #3003) that brought in $75,000 for the Barrett-Jackson Cancer Research Fund at T-Gen in memory of Russ and Brian Jackson; and a very patriotic 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Military Tribute truck (Lot #3004) donated by Chevrolet, which raised $125,000 for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
More excitement lies ahead tomorrow, with Jay Leno headed to the auction block with his 2000 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Edition Pickup (Lot #3006) to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
