Shipping a collector car – or any car, for that matter – can seem like a large and overwhelming task. Rest easy, though: The task can be simplified and worry-free when you have the right information and resources. To drive us through the process from start to finish, we turned to Reliable Carriers Vice President/COO Bob Sellers for some first-hand knowledge – and he knows his stuff. He’s been at the helm of Barrett-Jackson’s official automotive transport partner for nearly a decade.
When you want to ship your car to an auction, there are two steps to follow:
Do your research and pick a reputable carrier. Checking with the BBB and/or a quick online search for reviews can be invaluable when it comes to shipping your collector car. One of the most important factors is whether they are fully insured and licensed, and whether they use licensed and insured carriers/third-party services. (Reliable Carriers is an exclusive partner with Barrett-Jackson for good reasons – they have all the right insurance if, on the odd chance, something unforeseen happens during transport.)
Having your vehicle shipped across the country or across an international border requires some advance planning and commitment to details:
- Schedule the transport to an auction a minimum of three weeks in advance – especially if you are shipping the car internationally, to allow time for the customs process. Be sure to give the correct pickup address, contact phone number, and be able to supply the year, make, model, color and VIN of the vehicle. If you are shipping internationally, you’ll need to supply a copy of the title. Simple enough, right?
- Next, inspect and photograph your vehicle, noting the exact mileage and existing cosmetic defects, if any.
- Be available to the driver and transport truck at the time of pickup. The driver will have all of the necessary paperwork ready to go; you’ll just need to sign a few forms and hand over the keys.
- The transport company will then deliver your car as requested and unload it into the proper auction car check-in area.
When you purchase that “dream car” at an auction and want to ship it home, the same basic principles from above apply – except you won’t need to make arrangements three weeks in advance.
- Stop by the auction office at any Barrett-Jackson event and you’ll find options for domestic and international vehicle shipping readily available.
- When your vehicle arrives at its destination, be ready to take delivery. As long as an accurate address and contact information is provided, receiving your vehicle should be seamless.
