When starting the consignment process with Barrett-Jackson, the first question people often have is, “What’s my car worth?” There are a variety of guidebooks out there that can give a decent estimated range, but what’s better than actual sales transactions? The Barrett-Jackson website makes it easy to search by year range, make, model and even style to see all the similar cars that have hammered sold at past auctions. The first step is to create an account through the website and, once logged in, click on the “Results” section.

Here there are multiple ways to lookup sales records. You can search by a particular auction, year/make/model, or even Lot number if you’re looking for a specific car. After figuring out which search method you want, a list of all cars sold will be displayed, showing you a photo, the selling price and a brief description. Clicking on a listing will take you to the detail results page, where you can view all photos as well as the full description of the car.

A few helpful tips on finding comparable cars to yours: If it is a stock or stock restored car – for example, a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302, look for similar color combinations, engine/transmission combinations and options. Pay particular attention to whether there are original, NOS or aftermarket components used, all of which can have an important effect on value. Also take note of things like restoration history and documentation to see how your car stacks up. If you have a modified or custom car, look for similar modifications like type of engine upgrades, suspensions, chassis modifications, custom paint and interiors. Since no two customs are exactly alike, prioritize which features are most important. For example, if you have a Pro-Touring 1969 Camaro with an LS engine, upgraded suspension, billet wheels and custom racing seats, the engine and suspension will have a bigger effect on value than the wheels or seats.

While guide books can provide a great quick reference range and a certainly a useful tool, there is no better method than real-world sales numbers. Not only are they helpful when figuring out to expect when selling your car, they are also a great resource when buying a car as well.
