Details
1965 Volkswagen Type 3 custom notchback is powered by a Dave Greiner-built 2337cc 4-cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. It is equipped with Pauter B heads, twin NOS Dellorto 45 carburetors, custom short velocity stacks, DDS valve covers, MSD ignition, Porsche Bosch cast-iron distributor, Rancho transmission, Berg locking shifter with a period-correct handle, CSP ceramic-coated exhaust and heat exchangers, and an additional oil cooler with electric fan on a thermostat. Stainless-steel braided lines were used throughout. It has Sway-A-Way rear axles, Koni adjustable period correct shocks, OldSpeed narrowed front arms, Wilwood 4-piston front brakes, cross-drilled rotors on front, redrilled Type 3 drums on the rear, custom wheel spacers and Cayman wheels. This is a very complete and well-sorted car that is in many ways unrestored. The car has never been disassembled. The headliner and trunk liners are all original. Correct wraparound dash without damage and many pieces were rechromed instead of buying anything aftermarket. The car was purchased in Germany by a U.S. serviceman who brought the car home to Texas with him. The car had an exterior-only respray in the early '80s and was shown at various VW events. It was then kept in an indoor collection for years. The owner became interested in exotic cars and Ray Durham, a well-known Southern California hot-rod builder, bought the VW. The car has won many awards over the past 35 years. It comes with photographs showing the car in the warehouse collection, as well as images of its Volkswagen "birth certificate." The sale also includes copies of publications in which the car was featured, including VW Trends from the '80s, Hot VWs 1995, Hot VWs 2009, Hot VWs 2015 and various others.
