This 1976 Plymouth Volare is a re-creation of the "Island Wagon" as seen in the "Fantasy Island" television series from 1977 to 1984. Hollywood producer Aaron Spelling virtually ruled the TV airwaves in the 1970s. However, one pitch session he conducted with production partner Leonard Goldberg for ABC network executive Brandan Stoddart took an unexpected turn after six rejections when Spelling offhandedly blurted out: "What do you want? An island that people can go to, and all of their fantasies will be realized?" Unexpected to Spelling and Goldberg, Stoddard loved the idea, and "Fantasy Island" was developed for production. Starring veteran actor Ricardo Montalban as Mr. Roarke and Herve Villechaize as his trusted associate Tattoo, "Fantasy Island" was broadcast every Saturday night on ABC at 10 p.m., after smash hit "The Love Boat," also produced by Aaron Spelling. A succession of celebrity guest stars added pizazz, with many of them appearing repeatedly in different roles. A vintage Grumman Widgeon seaplane delivered the fantasy-seeking guests to the island and during the early part of the series, a Jeep CJ7 was used by Tattoo to pick them up and get around the fictional island. In later episodes, a 1976 Plymouth Volare station wagon, heavily customized into a beach car/passenger hack, was used. This attractive and highly authentic re-creation of the "Fantasy Island" TV Volare wagon is an original 318 V8-powered example with doors removed and hinges blanked off, accented by white 1970s-style off-road wheels, a rear spare wheel/tire, whip antenna, and red and white Surrey top. A Plymouth "Tuff" steering wheel and white upholstery, plus front bucket seats, finish off this captivating 1976 Plymouth Volare-based custom wagon. The build was completed for a "Fantasy Island" superfan couple by professionals prior to its acquisition in 2020 by Dr. Berkowitz, who added it to his growing movie and TV car collection. From The Dr. Stewart A. Berkowitz Collection.
