Lot #1143 - The 428 Cobra Jet was Ford's response to dealer and customer complaints that their performance offerings couldn't match up with the competitors from across town. Built on Ford's versatile FE engine platform, the Cobra Jet, designated by the R code in the VIN number, was conservatively rated at 335hp, while early testing showed a more accurate rating of around 411hp in its stock form. The Cobra Jet program was a very late addition to Ford's 1968 offering, becoming available for ordering in April 1968. The first run of 1968 R Codes were delivered directly to factory supported race teams, leaving only a handful of cars for public consumption in 1968. This 1968 R Code fastback is one of just 1,299 produced for 1968. It is one of just 706 GT fastbacks ordered with the 4-speed transmission. To further its rarity it was optioned with the 4.30:1 Traction-Lok rear end. For drivability, the rear end ratio has been changed to a more streetable 3.50:1 ratio. It still sports its staggered rear shock setup, which was a new for 1968 addition added only to 4-speed equipped Cobra Jets. It is presented as originally ordered in Wimbledon White with black interior and GT equipment group. The 68.5 R Code differentiated itself from other GTs with a single black stripe across the hood and cowl covering a unique functional Ram Air hood scoop which is present on the car. Correct 14" GT wheels wrapped in Polyglas F70x14 tires. Sold new by Conner Ford sales in Lockport, IN and documented by the Cobra Jet Registry and Deluxe Marti Report.
