Lot #15 - Orginally built in 1973 by one of the first professional dune buggy shops in Southern California. Sand Rail Manufacturing was cutting edge in its time with its unique single A-arm front suspension and rack & pinion steering. Using a variation of a high powered larger displacement VW engine and built close-ratio VW transaxle, these buggys were stout performers in their time and even today. The original frame features mild steel construction with hand bronzed braising at tubing unions. This original car has been completely restored to better than new standards with upgraded engine and drivetrain. Entire frame and many pieces have been powdercoated a sun sparkling Candy Apple Red contrasted with an abundance of chroming. The new high powered 2,180cc stroker and big bore engine features Engle racing cam, dual Weber 48mm carburetors, custom ported heads with big valves and full chrome and detail treatment. The high performance 4-speed VW transaxle features many upgrades not available at the time of the original build which includes components such as: full close-ratio 1st through 4th gears, 4 spider differential, dual aluminum side covers and sway away racing axles. The vehicle has been upgraded with a hydraulic pedal assembly, rear disc brakes and a turning brake lever system. Heavy duty rear torsion bars and shocks provide the damping necessary for climbing the steepest sand dunes.
